Rob Veno Free Play - BYU at Tennessee

Updated: Sep 4, 2019

THE PLAY: take BYU plus the 3.5 (-110)

Not often inclined to go against a team home for the second straight week which lost as a double digit favorite the previous week but this situation calls for it as much as any. Tennesee was embarrassed at home by the SunBelt's own Georgia State Panthers last Saturday which suggests an immediate situational bounce back may not be in the cards. UT was manhandled at the line of scrimmage getting out-rushed 213-93 (4.1 yards per carry to 3.0) and the Vols allowed four sacks while only getting two. Those types of numbers don't figure to go away versus a more stout and physically tougher squad in BYU. Cougars were overwhelmed in the second half last Thursday by #13 Utah which used superior trench play and wore their in-state rival down. Tennessee doesn't have those assets which will make offense somewhat easier for BYU this weekend while the Cougars defense is exponentially better than the GSU unit the Vols just lost to. Each of these teams is looking to rebound but BYU which is unintimidated by venues (is there an intimidation factor to Knoxville right now?) and looks to be the more advanced side. This statement from HC Jeremy Pruitt doesn't offer any inspirational reason to back his Volunteers at this point..."For us, we’ve got to go back and go to work. We’ve got to go back and practice the right way, work on creating the right habits. I’ll say it again: We’re young and inexperienced, and we’ve got to continue to grow.” Underdog price is worth the look here and hook makes it even more attractive.

Recommendation: BYU +3.5
