Play on: Arizona Diamondbacks +120
We'll go right back with the red hot Arizona Diamondbacks today as a dog versus Cincinnati. Arizona is now only 1.5 games within the Chicago Cubs for the National League's second wild card. The Diamondbacks will go with right-hander Mike Leake (11-10, 4.71) who is looking for his third win in a row. The veteran known for his pinpoint control gets a Reds team sinking in September, but Leake had has his struggles since coming over from the Mariners. Leake went win-less in his first four starts and has been a different (worse) pitcher on the road than at home for both the Diamondbacks and the Mariners. Leake won't need his best stuff today against anyone except Joey Votta who has had a lot of success versus Leake over his career hitting over .391 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI.
The Reds will start right-hander Anthony DeScalafani (9-8, 4.11) as they try to right the direction of a team that has lost 8 of its last 11. The Reds have been terrible at the plate, and there is no reason to think that changes today. But DeScalafani had been solid for the Reds in his two previous starts before Monday's dud versus the Phillies. He's given up a lot of homers this year -- 27 HR's in 27 starts -- but DeScalafani is 6-4 at home in Cincinnati with a solid ERA of 3.75.
This game should be another W for the Diamondbacks as they continue their march to the post-season. Can't imagine a situation where the Reds bats come alive too often as the season winds down, and Arizona has shown they can beat teams in a lot of different ways during this torrid streak.
